Our Free Family Ride presents everyone with an unmissable opportunity to saddle up and experience the unique thrill of cycling on closed roads in a safe and friendly environment!
Starting in Admirals Park in Chelmsford, participants are invited to complete as many loops of our beautiful 3 mile course as they wish. The route combines big, wide roads with cycle paths through beautiful parkland, promising a fun and varied route through Chelmsford that will be lined with members of the public cheering riders on. Everyone’s guaranteed to have a blast as they experience the novelty of cycling on roads without a car in sight!
It’s the perfect opportunity to have a fun and healthy day with friends and family and best of all… it’s absolutely FREE!
Where is the Family Ride taking place?
The Family Ride will start and finish in Admirals Park, Chelmsford. As well as being in the heart of Chelmsford City Centre, there will be easy access to and from the Vélo Village, in Hylands Park, before and after the Family Ride via the Cycle Path.
How long is the Family Ride?
One lap of the Family Ride will be approximately 3 miles and each session will last 1.5 hours. You can cycle the route as many times as you like within this time!
Do I have to start the Family Ride at the advertised opening times?
No, you can start the Family Ride anytime up to 11:15 or 13:45, depending on your chosen session, so don’t worry if you don’t arrive bang on the opening time!
Do I need to collect anything before the Family Ride?
Yes, you will need to collect your event wristband before you ride. You can do this at the Vélo Village, in Hylands Park, on Saturday 19 September or on arrival in Admirals Park on Sunday 20 September.
You will need to bring your confirmation email with you in order for us to confirm your registration and give you your event wristband.
To save yourself from queues on Sunday 20 September, we recommend collecting your wristband the day before and making the most of the fun family activities that will be available at the Vélo Village in Hylands Park!
Wristbands must be worn by all participants for the duration of the ride and you must fill out the emergency contact information required.
Will the Family Ride take place on closed roads?
The Family Ride participants will have the chance to experience the thrill of riding on closed roads alongside* our 100 and 50 mile riders! The final part of the Family Ride will take participants back to Admirals Park on Chelmsford’s Cycle Path.
*For the safety of all participants, the Family Ride and Vélo participants will ride in separate lanes.
How do I enter?
Our Family Ride is free to enter! You can register for either the morning (10:30 – 12:00) or afternoon (13:00 – 14:30) session! Entries are now open so grab your entry into our Family Ride now by clicking here.
All children aged 15 years or under must be registered by a parent or guardian who is taking part in the event and who is an adult over 18 years. If a child under 15 years is registered with an adult who is not their parent or guardian, the person making the registration must have the prior written consent of the child’s parent or legal guardian.
Each adult can register up to four children aged 15 years or under to whom they are fully responsible for during the ride.
Anyone aged 16 or 17 years must be entered by their parent or legal guardian but can collect their wristband and ride on their own.
What is the minimum age to enter?

All children aged 15 years or under must be accompanied and registered by a parent or guardian, who is an adult over 18 years. If a child under 15 years attends with an adult who is not their parent or guardian, the person making the registration must have the prior written consent of the child’s parent or legal guardian.
Adults wishing to bring along children under 5 years may do so providing they are secured in a BS standard child seat or trailer.
No adult may accompany more than four children on any ride and the registration system reflects this. This adult is fully responsible for these children for the duration of the ride.
Anyone aged 16 or 17 years must be entered by their parent or legal guardian but can ride on their own.
Age restrictions refer to the persons age on the day of the event.
Do I or my child have to wear a helmet?
In compliance with British Cycling’s rules and regulations and our own terms and conditions, helmets are compulsory for all those taking part in our rides, both children and adults.

How long before the start of each session should I arrive?
If you need to collect your event wristband on the Sunday 20 September, we recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before you wish to start the Family Ride.
If you have collected your event wristband on Saturday 19 September at the Vélo Village, you can turn up and join in the fun straight away!
