How do I enter?

Following an exclusive Priority Entry window, a limited number of Vélo Essex entries are now on general sale. Please click here to enter now!

What is the minimum age to enter?

Participants must be at least 16 years old and therefore only persons born on or before September 20, 2004 will be able to take part. Participants aged 16 and 17 on September 20, 2020 must present a signed parental consent form at Event Registration, in Hylands Park (CM2 8WQ), on Saturday September 19 to participate. You will be able to download the Parental Consent form once entries are on sale.

Can I ride for Charity?

Yes! You can make your miles matter by securing your place through one of our Lead Charities today for as little as £40. If you secure a General Entry, Fast Track or Business 100 place you can still raise funds for charity.

How do I improve my odds of starting with friends?

You will be asked to enter a Team Name during the registration process. If you wish to ride with friends, agree a Team Name and enter it on the entry form. Make sure all riders enter the Team Name exactly the same and we will do our best to put you in the same start wave. Do not put the name of the person you want to ride with as this will not help us allocate you to the same start wave.

If you’ve already entered and didn’t put a Team Name or want to edit your Team Name login to your Active account and click ‘Edit Registration’.
You have until two months before the event (July 20) to add / edit your Team Name.


Will my Rider Pack be posted to me?

All General Entry Riders must attend registration in person to collect their Rider Packs on Saturday September 19 between 08:00 and 20:00. Event Registration will be held in Hylands Park (CM2 8WQ).

If you can’t personally collect your Rider Pack from Hylands Park (CM2 8WQ) on Saturday September 19, you can send someone else on your behalf. They will need your Rider Number (issued approximately two weeks before the event), a photocopy of your ID (e.g. driving licence or passport) and a signed letter of consent.

Fast Track Riders and Business 100 Teams will have their Rider Packs posted to them 1 week before the event and will not need to attend registration.

All International Riders will have to collect their Rider Pack on Saturday September 19 at Event Registration in Hylands Park.

What is the Event Weekend Schedule?

Saturday September 19 – Event Registration for all General Entry Riders
Sunday September 20 – Event day

Where is Event Registration?

Event Registration will take place on Saturday September 19 and will be located in Hylands Park (CM2 8WQ) between 08:00-20:00.

Can someone collect my Rider Pack on my behalf on Saturday September 19?

If you can’t personally collect your Rider Pack on Saturday June 20, you can send someone else on your behalf. They will need your Rider Number (issued approximately two weeks before the event), a photocopy of your ID (e.g. driving licence or passport) and a signed letter of consent.
One person can collect on behalf of multiple riders, providing they have everything listed above for each Rider Pack.

When and where do I collect my Goodie Bag?

General Entry riders will get their Goodie Bag when collecting their Event Pack on Saturday September 19.
Fast Track and Business 100 Riders will need to collect their Goodie Bag from the Event Village on Sunday September 20 post completing your ride.



What type of bikes are not allowed?

It is necessary for us to restrict or prohibit various types of pedal bicycles and equipment at Vélo Essex for health and safety reasons. It is our responsibility to manage the risks involved with the number of riders we are placing on the closed roads across the whole of the routes.

Bikes with disc wheels, recumbent bicycles with full fairing or tricycle configuration, electronic bikes not compliant with current UK/EU legal requirements for ‘electrically assisted pedal cycles’ (EAPCs), unicycles, elliptical cycles, penny farthings, tricycles, quad cycles, BMX bikes, fixed gear bikes / singlespeeds / fixies (allowed with two independent brakes and a freehub) and handbikes / cycles. Any unconventional handlebars including triathlon bars, aero bars, clip-ons, prayer bars, Spinaci bars and cow bars, handlebar extensions, bars without Bar end plugs fitted; and any other items which the Organiser considers may be a danger to the safety of other participants.

We are sorry to disappoint certain groups of riders with the restriction of certain bikes and equipment. These decisions are not taken lightly and are made after a comprehensive review of all risks associated with a participant using such bikes or equipment, as well as the risks present to themselves from the large numbers of cyclists participating in the event. Can I ride my e-bike at Vélo Essex?

For Vélo Essex, e-bikes will be permitted on all distances. Only those cycles that comply with current UK/EU legal requirements for ‘electrically assisted pedal cycles’ (EAPCs) are permitted in the sportive. EAPCs still require the rider to pedal and the electric motor, with a maximum power of 250 watts, cannot provide assistance when travelling at more than 25 km/h (15.5mph). Participants using e-bikes must still meet the requirements for entering as per the Event T&Cs.

If you wish to participate in Vélo Essex on an e-bike, you must inform us by emailing hello@veloessex.com (stating your full name) prior to purchasing your entry. These details are required so you can be placed in a suitable start wave for safety reasons.

Can I ride my recumbent bike at Vélo Essex?

Recumbent Cycles (not full fairing) with a sufficient visible rear marker that is 2m in height will be permitted on all distances at Vélo Essex. If you wish to participate on a recumbent, you must inform us by emailing hello@veloessex.com (stating your full name and image of recumbent) prior to purchasing your entry. These details are required so you can be placed in a suitable start wave for safety reasons.


Where will the ride start and finish?

Vélo Essex will start and finish from Hylands Park, exact locations will be released closer to the event.

How will I know my exact start time?

You will find out your start time approximately 2 weeks before the event. You can move back to a later wave but not forward to an earlier wave. You do not need to inform us if you decide to move back to a later wave.

What food and drink will be available at the Rider Pit Stops?

Rider Pit Stops will be stocked with both sweet and savoury bites, fruit, water and High5 energy products (gels and drink). Although Rider Pit Stops will endeavour to cater for all, if riders have specific nutritional or dietary requirements, we strongly recommend that they bring with them suitable sustenance for their ride. Exact Pit Stop locations will be available in the Rider Info Guide, published online closer to the event.

What is the minimum speed riders must maintain?

To ensure we’re able to reopen the roads on time, we are required to enforce the minimum average speed of 11mph (17.5kph) across the whole of the ride – this includes time spent at any Rider Pit Stops or Water & Toilet Stops.

What shall I bring with me on the day?

We highly advise all riders to carry two water bottles with them at all times, ideally with one filled with energy product. Whilst we have fully stocked feed stations, we advise riders to bring energy products with them on the ride just in case.

As well as our Rider Pit Sports and Hydration Stations, our well-equipped Domestiques will be out on the route to help riders. However, we recommend you bring the basics including items such as 2 x inner tubes, mini pump, tyre levers and a multi-tool are all useful and needed.

Will there be shower facilities to use after the ride?

There are no shower facilities available for riders either pre or post ride.

What's the withdrawal policy?

Should you wish to withdraw from the event please contact our team on hello@veloessex.com. Please note that no refunds will be issued in the event of withdrawal.
Participants may transfer their entry to another person up to two months before the event (July 20, 2020), subject to a transfer fee of £10. The new participant must sign up, agree to the event terms and conditions as well as pay the entry fee to complete the transfer. Once payment has been received the original rider will be refunded their entry fee (minus £10 to cover the transfer fee). Please email hello@veloessex.com for further details.

Do you need volunteers?

We are looking for an army of keen volunteers to help make the weekend special for all our riders and the wider county of Essex! If you would like to be involved please got to our Volunteer Portal.

When can I find out more details about road closures?

Due to the scale of Vélo Essex, road closures will be implemented across the full route to facilitate safe passage for all participants.

The route has been carefully considered and selected with the partnership of all local authorities, emergency services and transport operators to minimise the inconvenience of the necessary road closures. Emergency Services will be operating as usual and the public should use normal protocol in the case of an emergency.
